More information about the Holding Space for Grief Retreat

Why we are gathering
Grief touches us all at some point in our lives, but the way we experience it will vary from one person to the next and from one circumstance to another.  The Holding Space for Grief Retreat will allow us to take the time and space we each need to reflect on, process and honour our unique experiences of grief and loss in the company of others who are on their own grieving journey.

What we can expect
This intimate gathering will welcome eight people to hold space for ourselves and each other in a spirit of support, comfort, compassion and care. We will be welcomed with comfortable and peaceful accommodations surrounded by trees and water, nourishing food, and thoughtfully planned activities designed to help us pause, be gentle on ourselves, and listen inward for what we need.  Activities are all optional, and you will also have the choice at any point to simply rest and relax on your own in your cozy cabin by the lake.

Who will be holding the space
Aanishinaabe healer Gerard Sagassige, along with helpers Robin Sutherland and Caralyn Quan, will be our guides as over four days we participate in a range of gentle and optional activities that draw on traditional Aanishinaabe spirituality, knowledge, ritual and ceremony but are applicable to and welcoming of people of all Nations and beliefs.  Learn more about Gerard, Robin and Caralyn below.

Activities may include:

  • Opening, closing and sharing circles to hear each other’s stories

  • Sunrise ceremonies to greet the day and set intentions

  • Daily meditations on the land to reflect and process

  • Nightly sweats / saunas to cleanse and purify

  • Feasting of ancestors to honour those who have passed

  • Aanishinaabe teachings related to grief and loss

Other activities may include time on the land and water, guided writing and creative processes, gentle movement, campfires and camaraderie.

Who should attend
Regardless of the nature of your grief - loss of a loved one, pregnancy loss, unexpected life changes, traumatic events, diagnosis of an illness, or something else - or where you are on your grieving journey, you will be welcome to participate in whatever way feels good to you, and to share however much or little about your grief as feels comfortable for you.

About our hosts

  • Gerard Sagassige

    TRADITIONAL HEALER

Ahnii N Boozhoo! Since I was young, I’ve wandered around Turtle Island and beyond. I am Mississauga nation (Pottawami, Ojibway, Odawa) Anishnabek and registered member of Curve Lake #35 First Nation. I am a proud dad, step dad, and grandad. I have facilitated workshops and seeded cultural language camps throughout Indingeous territories and have been a spiritual advocate for well over 30 years. Overall, I think the way I was raised and who raised me contributes to my humour, knowledge, and most importantly lifelong protocol to all Nations. I reference myself as an “ol time mentor” if anything. I have an old teaching style with simple living within Creator’s spirit, Miigwech.

  • Robin Sutherland

    HELPER

I am a mother of two young ones (five and three years old), community artist and social entrepreneur.  My partner and I now own Northern Skies Resort. My life work in the intersection of the arts, social justice, and reconciliation brought me to learn from and experience ceremony led by Gerard who is now a close friend, mentor and teacher. My grief journey has included late term pregnancy loss and within the last year, the loss of multiple family members including my dad from Leukemia. Gerard has helped me navigate these painful moments with his kindness, humour, and knowledge of natural medicine and ceremony. My own experience with loss and my wish for a soft place to land while navigating grief inspired me to work with Gerard and Caralyn to host this retreat for others on their own grieving journey. I look forward to welcoming participants to experience the natural healing of this place along with the kind and gentle support of myself, Gerard and Caralyn.

  • Caralyn Quan

    HELPER

I am a community worker and organizer, facilitator, and yoga and meditation teacher. I have worked in the nonprofit and mental health sector for over 10 years. In my current day job, I work in provincial mental health advocacy and mobilize youth and families to create change in the mental health system. Prior to this I've worked as a frontline worker in youth programs in Toronto. I also have worked on provincial youth leadership and community building initiatives with Robin, Gerard, and other inspiring leaders. It is one of my great honours to be one of Gerard’s helpers and to learn from him. I have been lucky to work with both Robin and Gerard on two Waasinode retreats so far.  I believe the opportunity to experience harmony through the natural medicine of the land is the gift of Waasinodē Shkekigemek and I am looking forward to tapping into these gifts as we explore the important work of holding space for grief
